A very good set of antique low hoop back Windsor chairs, with a rich mellow aged patina, circa 1840. The chairs having a shaped & pierced backsplat, each chair having ash turnings, bows and spindles and a Crinoline stretcher and a shaped elm seat. The Windsor chair being being a uniquely English design, this set of chairs made in the Thames valley area of Windsor in the early 19th century, the turnings, spindles and bow backs were made by 'Bodgers' (an old English term for the craftsmen who made these chair parts). Bodgers would make the Windsor chair parts in the woods where the trees were felled from green timber, thus allowing the bows to be made.
This is a very good set of four antique country Windsor chairs, the chairs are in very good condition, no alterations, full height and are robust & stable and ready for use, they have just been professionally cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
