Two American Old West Watercolor Painting Ink & Pencil Drawings Cowboy Horses by Edward (John Edward) Borein, 1898

Two rare, early, original artworks by American Southwest artist, John Edward Borein (1873–1945). A watercolor painting of a mounted cowboy or vaquero, the other of a vaquero driving a pair of steers, signed and dated 1898.

A rare opportunity to acquire an original painting plus on the verso, an original drawing by the most authentic of Western artists, who as a young man was a cowboy himself! On one side there is a vertical painting of a mounted cowboy or Vaquero, the horse mid-trot. The painting is drawn in pencil and painted in watercolor. To the verso is a pencil drawing of a cowboy on horseback  driving a pair of steers. Titled and dated; "Manucernads  Wild Cattle", signed and dated below " Borein '98". Mancuerna is a word used in the 19th century in Mexico and Spanish Colonial California for a pair of cattle.
Both works are in one frame under glass and the frame can be orientated both vertically and horizontally depending on which image one wishes to see.
The work was acquired from Gallery de Silva in the early 1960s, a well respected gallery affiliated with the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Artist Biography:
Borein was born in San Leandro, California in 1873, he was a celebrated American etcher, painter and illustrator. He extensively traveled the western United States working as a cowboy before transitioning to become a full-time professional artist. He spend his early artistic career working in studios between Oakland, California and New York, New York. Later in his career, Borein resided in Santa Barbara California where he worked for over 20 years. His artwork depicted Spanish Colonial California, the American Frontier, and Mexico. 
     Borein took to art at an early age and he quickly became fascinated with the American Frontier. At the age of 17 he found work as a cowboy in 1893. At his mother's insistence, Borein returned home after a year doing ranch work and spent a month at the San Francisco Art Association Art School, after which he promptly resumed ranching.  It was in 1896 when Borein was encouraged to send a few of his drawing into The Land of Sunshine. Borein worked on the ranches during the day, sketching when he could, and further practicing his art in the evening. However, despite finding some success publishing his early work, he continued to resist settling down and focused on his true love, working as a cowboy. In 1903, toward the end of his cowboy days, Borein found himself working on the 500,000 acre Hacienda Babicora in the employ of Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, mother of publisher William Randolph Hearst. 
     In his early thirties Borein decided to pursue a career as a professional artist and moved to New York City, where his studio soon became a favorite haunt for important figures such as Will Rogers, Charles M. Russell, Carl Oscar Borg and Buffalo Bill Cody.
     Edward Borein, along with Charlie Russell, is the most authentic of all the early cowboy artists by virtue of his familiarity with the lifestyle, sites and sounds of the west. "I will leave only an accurate picture of the West, nothing else but that. If anything isn't authentic or just right, I won't put it in any of my work."
     Borein earned himself a reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of the American West, and few artists have done so as accurately and skillfully as Borein.
His work is housed in many major galleries and museums including; Santa Barbara Art Gallery, Santa Barbara Historical Museum, Smithsonian American Museum, Amon Carter Museum, Whitney Gallery of Western Art, C. M. Russell Museum, Palm Springs Museum, The Rockwell Collection, to name just a few!
