A fine & Monumental antique oil on canvas painting, a Scottish landscape/genre scene, signed and dated  "Richard Ansdell RA 1871".
The painting depicting a Scottish Highland scene of two gentlemen farmers guiding three shire-horses pulling a massive tree trunk on a cart, and receiving some encouragement from a Border Collie sheepdog to the foreground. The painting is housed in the original gilded frame, both the frame and painting are in excellent condition, to the verso the frame and stretcher are old gallery annotations and a red wax seal from the now defunct Portland Oregon "Paul Gross Galleries", Gross was well known for selling fine paintings and sculpture, he was instrumental in assisting Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy redecorate the White House, during the Kennedy Administration in 1961.

Bloomsbury Fine Art & Antiques wishes to extend thanks to Sarah Dean Kellham (Ansdell), who compiles a catalogue Raisonne of her Great Great Grandfather's work, she described the painting as "a splendid painting and very well executed". She believes this work and others she has identified are by a contemporary of Richard Ansdell who specialized in paintings of working horses. Works of this size by Richard Andsell have sold at auction for anywhere from $300,000 to over $900,000, further to Sarah Dean (Ansdell's) opinion this very fine monumental 19th century painting is listed for a very modest fraction of these estimates.
