A good antique marine oil on canvas painting by Gideon Jacques Denny (1830-1886).
The painting depicts a six sail sailing ship on the stormy sea, most likely California, circa 1865. The painting is signed lower right and is housed in the original gilded gesso frame. Condition is very good, no condition issues or damage.
Gideon Jacques Denny was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1830, and arrived in San Francisco with the Gold Rush in 1849. Finding work on the San Francisco docks taxing, Denny left for art studies in Milwaukee, with Samuel Marsden Brookes. In 1862 Denny returned to establish a studio in San Francisco after 6 years and exhibited to favorable reviews. Though he painted occasional landscapes and portraits, Denny specialized in works featuring shipping activity, a subject that fascinated him since boyhood. He was also a inveterate traveler and traveled to Hawaii and South America.
His works are featured in the Berkeley Art Museum, the Bishop Museum (Honolulu), the Crocker Art Museum (Sacramento, California), the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, and the Oakland Museum of California and the Smithsonian Institute are among the public collections holding works by Gideon Jacques Denny.
