A rare & unusual antique American Aesthetic Movement painted corner cabinet, signed, circa 1875. The ebonized cabinet having a hand stenciled foliate border, the single door also having twin bands of stenciled decoration. The door is finely painted with a tree & a seated owl, which was one of the key animal decorations of the Aesthetic Movement, drawing upon influence from Japanese designs. The door enclosing three shelves, the verso of the door also having a painted branch to the central panel & the artist's monogram "R M T". The front of the cabinet having the Latin phrase "Sine Sapientia Nihil", or "Nothing Without Wisdom!"
