An antique Italian 17th century carved walnut baroque cassone chest, circa 1680. The cassone having a lift up lid with the original snipe hinges, below is a band of dentil carving, the front of the chest having a series of carved corbel brackets and a central panel carved with rosettes & acanthus leaves, to each side is a carved female mask. The cassone is raised on compressed scrolled bracket feet below a band of carved acanthus molding and to each side is a hand forged iron carrying handle, the chest is lined with a high quality red satin fabric.
The chest is very robust and could also be used as a seat or bench, condition despite being 350 years old is very good.
