Antique Welsh Carved Oak Eisteddfod Bardic Chair Newmarket Trelawnyd Wales 1901

An important antique Welsh vernacular Eisteddfod carved oak throne chair (Cadair Eisteddfod), from North Wales, Flintshire, dated 1901.

An Eisteddfod is a traditional Welsh festival of the arts, celebrating literature, music, and performance. The tradition dates back to at least 1176, It preserves and promotes Welsh culture and the Welsh language.  People compete in poetry, singing, instrumental music, drama, and dance, these types of Bardic Chairs are awarded as the highest honors to poets in a grand ceremony, "The Gorsedd" is an association of poets, writers and musicians who guide the festival rituals.
This chair was awarded in 1901 to the winner of the festival, the chair is finely carved with a crest and the title of "Cadair Eisteddfod", (meaning Eisteddfod chair) in the Celtic Welsh language named Cymraeg. The back having a carved floral & foliate panel flanked with carved elliptical columns, below is carved the town and date: "Newmarket 1901". 
The Northern Welsh town of Newmarket was so named from 1710 until 1954, when it reverted to it's original Welsh language name of Trelawnyd, dating back to circa 1250.
The chair base has a carved skirt with crests and foliate on all sides and is raised on 'bobbin' turned legs and stretchers, having corresponding turned arms and arm supports.
The chair is in very good antique condition, it is sturdy and comfortable, this rare and unusual piece of antique vernacular Welsh furniture is ready to grace your space.
