A very handsome & substantial antique carved mahogany sideboard, or Lancashire dresser, circa 1860.
Sideboards of this type were specific to the North of England in the mid to late 19th century, and in particular the Lancashire region and are generally referred to as "Lancashire Dressers". Such cabinets were referred to as "dressers" as that is where food would be 'dressed' before serving to the table.
The dresser has a tall arched & carved back, to protect the wall from splashes when meat was carved, the top with a finial of fruit & leaves and corresponding leaf carving at the sides about two small condiment drawers with hexagonal glass pulls. The dresser base with two serpentine shaped drawers with four deep drawers below fitted with the original pressed glass pulls. The dresser is raised on tall turned bun feel, above are three carved corbel brackets, carved with a leaf design.
The sideboard is in remarkable antique condition, original finish and original pulls, this very handsome dresser is ready to grace your home and provide another 160 years of use.
