A fine antique Scottish sterling silver mounted ram's horn snuff mull, set with a large cairngorm gemstone, Edinburgh 1884, by silversmith Peter MacGregor Westren.
This rare Scottish ceremonial table snuff mull having a hinged lid with repousse decoration and inset with a large faceted cut cairngorm (citrine quartz) gem, the stone is of a rare blond color & large size at almost 40mm long by 25mm wide. The snuff having a silver repousse mount cartouche with the initials E.W.S.J, the snuff mull was used by the Royal Thistle Society of Scotland.
At the end of the horn is an engraved silver mount in the shpe of a thistle, the mull has it's original silver tools attached by silver chains and comprising; a four toed hare's foot, a snuff rake and a perforated snuff spoon.
The silver is hallmarked with the thistle for Scotland and a castle for Edinburgh and the makers marks for Peter MacGregor Westren, silversmith and the date letter "C" for 1884-5.
Condition is very good indeed. A rare and important silver & ram's horn snuff mull.
