A good antique English oak bookcase/ display cabinet, likely designed by Leonard Wyburd (1865-1958), for Liberty & Co, London, circa 1905

The cabinet having a stepped cornice to the top, with large dentil corbel brackets below, the top part of the cabinet with two glass doors, enclosing three adjustable shelves allowing storage of  books of all sizes, including very large format books. The base having two paneled cupboard doors, each with incised carved decoration and a central oval rosette, enclosed is a single shelf. Both sets of doors have twin sets of long  Art Nouveau, copper strap hinges, the cabinet is raised on highly stylized curved feet. Both sets of doors have the original locks and brass hardware, keys are present and the door lock and open with ease.

This very handsome Arts & Crafts bookcase is in wonderful condition and is ready to grace your home or office.

Leonard Wyburd was chief designer for Liberty & Co., and created many of their iconic Arts & Crafts furniture designs. By the late 1890s, Wyburd was at the forefront of European furniture design, he combined elements of Art and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Medieval English revivalism. Liberty furniture was typically fashioned of solid oak or mahogany, well yet simply made, sometimes with small cut-outs, stained glass insets or elaborate beaten copper hinges.
