An exquisite large antique 19th century Italian Neoclassical Grand Tour Carrara marble statue of Psyche, by Oreste Ferrari (1823-1880), signed and dated, Rome, 1880.
The sculpture depicts a classically posed, beautiful, nude winged female figure, sitting in repose against a palm tree. She has a beautiful face and contemplatively stares into the foreground, her hair tresses cascade across her wings. She sits on a rocky outcrop, with one leg gently raised and leaning against the other, her right leg outstretched, to the rear the sculpture is signed "Oreste Ferrari" and dated "Roma 1880". The statue is carved from a single block of fine-grained Carrara marble and displays exceptional anatomical precision, the statue having a soft luminous patina. The workshops of Oreste Ferrari were based in Rome, they were renowned sculptors producing very high quality sculpture at the peak of the Grand Tour era.
The sculpture is raised on a green & white veined stepped marble plinth, condition is very good indeed, the sculpture is of large size and weighs about 120 lbs.
