A fine &  large antique Japanese Meiji period Tokyo School Bronze Sculpture lamp and stand, by Miyao Eisuke (1850-1920), circa 1890.
This beautiful large bronze sculpture is by the prominent Japanese bronze master workshop director; Miyao Eisuke, who was active during the golden age of Japanese bronze making, during the Meiji period. His workshops created incredibly high quality bronze figures for his family's workshops in both Yokohama and Tokyo. The Miyao Company first exhibited in 1881 at the Tokyo Exposition and then globally until the early part of the 20th century.
This beautiful patinated bronze depicts a bijin (beautiful woman) reading from a scroll and holding it to the light from the lantern, she stands beside a lantern with a roof atop which is raised upon a gnarled tree stump, it is signed to the rear base inside a rectangular cartouche. Authentic Miyao sculptures stand on lacquered Wooden Bases (sometimes gilded), this bronze is raised on the original wooden base. The lantern has been wired to code and provides a subtle and charming light.
The bronze is in excellent condition, Miyao's bronzes were frequently copied by lesser workshops, this bronze is signed and retains the original stand and is guaranteed to be from the Miyao workshop. It is large in size at around 29" tall and is substantial in weight around 40lbs. It is ready to grace your space.
