A good antique Italian Grand Tour miniature hand-painted portrait on a porcelain plaque of Beatrice Cenci after the original by Guido Reni (1575-1642), the painting in a gilt brass micro mosaic frame, Florence, circa 1890.
This very attractive Grand Tour miniature portrait of Beatrice Cenci was for several hundred years believed to be by Guido Reni, and scholars now believe that it is by Ginerva Cantofoli (1608-1672), the painting is signed illegibly by the artist & dated 1895, the original is housed in the National Gallery in Rome. The rear of the plaque is titled in red "Cenci" and at the base there is a black Fleur des lis mark & marked "Firenze", and an incised stamp with the number "51".
The painting is housed in the original gilded brass easel frame with a coiled rim & a border of colorful floral micro mosaic made from glass tesserae, the frame standing on acorn shaped feet. Micro mosaic was a popular craft in Italy originating in the 18th century & reached it's peak during the Grand Tour era of the 19th century.
Both the painting and frame are in excellent condition, this very elegant antique Grand Tour souvenir is ready to grace your space.
