Antique Italian Baroque Walnut & Engraved Iron Jewelry Strong Box Cassone 1600

A rare antique 17th-century Italian Baroque walnut jewelry or strong box, circa 1600. 
The box made from solid walnut, the substantial box having a locking hinged lid with hand-forged iron bolts, the bolts go through the lid and connect to a pair of heavy gauge engraved strap hinges. The box has a hand-forged iron carrying handle with gimballed fittings allowing the handle to move.
To the front is a hand-forged iron flower shaped lock escutcheon plate, with the original hand-cut steel lock and key, the lock opens and closes.
The box is raised on carved claw feet with traces of gilding. The box is of very substantial and robust construction and was designed to keep objects of considerable value like jewelry, gold or coinage. The box is designed in the form of a cassone or chest, typical of the late Italian Renaissance or early Baroque period.
This rare antique strong box is in remarkably good original condition.
