An important Italian Renaissance carved walnut & polychrome statue of The Madonna, Siena, by Lorenzo di Pietro (1420-1480) also known as Vecchietta, the statue circa 1460.
This very beautiful Sienese carved Virgin from the late 1400s was a devotional object, it depicts the Virgin Mary kneeling in adoration. The figure is deftly and sensitively carved from limewood and gesso and is archetypical of the Sienese school of carving; depicting a graceful, elongated figure, with rich, ornamental detail. The figure retains much of the original polychrome and traces of gilding.
The Virgin is wearing her hair braided in a hairband typical of the style in Italy during the Renaissance, her brown dress richly painted, the carving showing the folds of the dress fabric. The statue has parcel gilt highlights
on the Virgin's belt, cuffs and dress yolk, her face solemn and meditative and her hands held in prayer.
This very rare Renaissance carving is in very good condition and is ready to grace your space.
Provenance;
From a historic European collection of important Renaissance carvings

Heavily influenced by Donatello during his stay in Siena (1457–59), key artists like Vecchietta (Lorenzo di Pietro) created expressive, often polychromed, wooden and stone sculptures that maintained a uniquely emotional, lyrical, and sometimes otherworldly, spiritual quality.
