A rare & important antique Islamic Ottoman blue & white Iznik pottery pilgrim flask, Turkey or Greater Syria, circa 1600.
The flask is of circular form, around the edge of the flask is a band of floral garlanded decoration, the decoration extends to the squat circular spout.
Both sides of the flask are decorated with a panel of floral Arabesque with an interlaced star shaped medalion to the center, the flask stands on a pair of triangular feet. To the shoulders are a pair of pierced lugs to allow the flask to be suspended from a chain or cord.
This is a particulary nice example of a blue and white Islamic Iznik style flask, circa 1600 and in good condition.
Such vessels were named pilgrim's flask as they were used on hunting trips or holy pilgrimages, in Arabic they were sometimes called a Zamzameyyah, due to the fact that pilgrims used to fill such flasks with holy water from the famous well in Mecca called Zamzam.
Iznik & Kutahya are towns in Turkey with hundreds of years of history making high quality ceramics and tiles.
