A good and large, late 18th century, Greek, Eastern Orthodox hand-painted & gilded icon of three saints, circa 1780.
This traditional Greek Orthodox icon is painted in the Byzantine style, using egg tempera paint on a poplar wood panel.
The icon depicts three saints: Saint Charalambos, a bishop and patron saint of healing. Saint Simeon the Stylite to the center, who spent 37 years living atop a column or stylos, he is seen emerging from his pillar. Saint Stylianos, the patron saint of children, seen far left, holding a swaddled child.
Each saint is illuminated with a a gold leaf halo, and each saint holds a scroll with prayers or a prayerbook.
The icon is very well painted on a vibrant red background. The icon has a pair of horizontal recessed supports known to icon collectors by its Russian term of shponki.
Condition is very good indeed, this very attractive antique Greek Orthodox icon is ready to grace your wall.
