A very good antique Regency flame mahogany wine, hunt or social table, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster, Circa 1820. 

Of typical horseshoe form with both leaves extended and of crescent form with leaves down, the leaves are hinged & are supported by pull out loper supports, with both leaves up the table is 45" deep. The table having a brass rail mounted with two detachable swivel-hinged arms terminating in two brass decanter coasters, the table is raised on four ring turned & reeded tapering legs terminating in brass caps and castors. Condition is very good, no damage or restoration noted, the table is ready to grace your space

This type of table was made for the principal purpose of sociable drinking & historically sitters would imbibe either wines, fortified wines or spirits while seated at these tables, typically after dinner time. The main brass rail or rod would rotate two decanters set within their respective coasters among the various recipients. They were also used by riders either before or after a hunt, hence the different names that one can equally apply to them.
A design for this type of table was produced by George Hepplewhite & published posthumously in "The Cabinet-Maker's Book of Prices" in 1793 under the title of 'Gentlemen's Social Table'. Related examples include two by Gillows of Lancaster, one of which is illustrated in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. I, 1988, Woodbridge, pl. 247, p. 249, and the other which appears in P. Macquoid & R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, Vol. III, 1954, London, fig. 1, p. 319.
