A fine antique French Grand Tour cast bronze hippocampus, seahorse statue desk ornament, circa 1820. This wonderful bronze is cast by the lost wax method (cire perdue), it depicts a Hippocampus from Roman (& Greek) mythology, a creature with the upper body of a horse and the lower body of a fish, the seahorse is gilded and finely cast, even the scales on the fish tale are discernible. The hippocampus is raised on a Neoclassical plinth with bands of gilded acanthus leaves to each side is a cast mask of the Roman sea god Neptune with a pair of crossed tridents. Condition is very good, great patina, a very handsome early 19th century French895 bronze.
