A good antique English Charles II period carved oak Bible or deed box, from the late 1600s.
The box is made of typical six plank and joined pegged construction, the box with a hinged lid and hand cut iron strap hinges. The front panel with a deeply carved arcade of interlaced semi-circular arches or lunettes, internally carved with stylized flowers devices, to the center is a hand cut iron lock-plate. The front two edges are decorated with chip carving, the box with a deep honey colored patina, the box has just lovingly received a coat of wax in Bloomsbury's professional workshops.
The box is in good antique condition and is ready to grace your space.
Such boxes were highly valued in the 17th century when early printed bibles were exceptionally expensive, but they were also used for other family documents such as title deeds and wedding and baptismal certificates.
