An early 18th century Welsh oak Cwpwrdd tridarn (three part cupboard) of outstanding quality with superb patina, from the Snowdonia region of North Wales, circa 1740.

A wonderful vernacular Welsh cabinet, these three section distinctive cabinets were only made in North Wales and specifically in Caernarfonshire and Snowdonia. Such furniture was for the Yeoman landowning middle class of rural British and Welsh society during the medieval and early modern eras.
The (Cwpwrdd) Tridarn in North Wales is directly linked to the unique pride of the Welsh yeoman. Because they were commoners who worked with their hands, they did not have coats of arms like the gentry. Instead, they used their farmhouses and fine vernacular furniture to broadcast their success. Commissioning a massive, three-tiered oak cupboard like this was the ultimate statement of the prosperity and status of a yeoman family.
This tridarn's top tier having an open, canopied display gallery featuring a scalloped apron, the back with recessed panels and the sides with open windows with curved decorative bars. To the front are a pair of turned column supports rising from shaped brackets.
The middle tier having large turned down-facing bun shaped finials, there are twin arched paneled doors with reticulated brass lock-plates and one central arched panel, the middle tier has four delicately carved rope-twist columns.
The base tier is fitted with three drawers & the original brass bun shaped pulls and lock-plate, below is a single spice drawer above two rectangular panels. The base having two doors with twin arched shaped panels and one rectangular panel, the tridarn is raised on stile feet.
The cabinet separates into its three sections for ease of moving, it is of joined and pegged construction throughout. The cabinet has wonderful deep mellow, warm honey colored patina, built up over 300 years.
A remarkable cwpwrdd tridarn and a very fine example of Northern Welsh vernacular furniture from the early 1700s, ready to grace your space.
