A fine antique Chinese Qing dynasty export watercolor and gouache pith painting, circa 1840.
This very attractive antique painting came from a tradition that started in the very early 19th century and was fueled by Western Merchants coming to the East, studios in canton were set up to produce paintings for the booming Western demand.
These works were painted on pith which came from the Chinese rice paper plant, it was lightweight and allowed paint to dry in a vibrant and almost three dimensional style.
This painting depicts an Imperial Mandarin procession, possibly a wedding ceremony, with many brightly costumed attendants carrying a table with an archaic bronze incense censer.
This very attractive painting is housed under glass, in a hardwood black lacquer and gilded frame, condition is very good and ready to hang.
