A rare antique early 18th century carved walnut strongbox chest, dated and dedicated, Simmern, Germany 1737.

This very fine antique box is incredibly stout and robust, made from solid walnut and crafted in 1737 and likely served a civil, guild, or personal storage chest for important documents, located in Simmern: a historic Medieval town in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany.
The lift up hinged lid having stepped top with 'fish scale' carving which is repeated to the front of the chest. The front having two fielded panels carved with German text, loosely translate as; " The Roth Estate Civic Hall Simmern 1737".
The chest has substantial engraved and hand-forged steel strap hinges to the lid and hand-forged carrying handles to the sides, the chest is raised on tall, turned bun feet.
The chest was a guild box or document repository designed to secure official guild papers, member registries, or legal deeds at a municipal building.

The chest is in very good antique condition, this rare piece of German history is ready to grace your space.
