A finely painted early 19th century Russian Orthodox icon, Saint Nicholas of Myra, circa 1820.
This traditional Russian icon is finely painted with egg tempera paint and gesso on a limewood panel, it depicts St, Nicholas of Myra wearing bishop's vestments, also known as St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. A highly important saint in the Orthodox church, the reputation of St. Nicholas's secret gift-giving gave rise to the folklore of Santa Claus.
The saint is depicted holding an open gospel written in cyrillic script, with a liturgical reading from the Gospel of Luke, above St. Nicholas there are images of Christ and the Virgin Mary.
There are depictions of two other standing saints painted to either side of the border.
The icon is very well painted and is in excellent antique condition, and has not received restoration. This very attractive early 19th century icon originated from one of the 'Old Believer's' workshops and is ready to hang on your wall.
