A very attractive mid-19th century oil on canvas Romantic Realist landscape portrait of a beautiful young woman, signed and dated 1860, Haynes King (Barbados 1831-London-1904).

Haynes King who was born in the Caribbean in the 1830s, and moved to London in his early 20s to pursue his artistic career, he was a talented painter of genre scenes, landscapes and portraits.
This is a fine example of one of his romantic portrait landscapes, depicting a young beautiful woman, possibly in her late teens, she is seated in a bucolic landscape, with farm cottages to the background. She looks out at the viewer, wearing a rich purple dress paired with a vibrant embroidered shawl draped over her shoulders. There is just a glint of gold suggesting she is wearing earrings, a pink flower is delicately tucked into her dark lustrous hair, adding a touch of sentimental detail typical of King's stylized characters.
This young woman is a model he had painted a number of times as there are other existing portraits of her.
The painting has King's "HK" monogram lower right in red and is dated 1860, the painting is housed in the original and magnificent gilded gesso frame. Condition is very good, this lovely mid 19th century painting by the well respected and listed artist Haynes King is ready to grace your wall.

Artist Biography
Haynes King (1831–1904) was a very prominent Victorian genre, landscape, and portrait painter. He became highly celebrated within the 19th-century British art community for his sentimental depictions of domestic life. King was born in Bridgetown, Barbados, in December 1831, to Robert Morgan King and his wife, Maria.
His early life in the Caribbean gave little indication of his future profession. At age 23 (1854), he relocated to London to formally pursue art.
He enrolled at Leigh’s Academy (which later became the famous Heatherley School of Fine Art) on Newman Street, London.
King began exhibiting his work at the Society of British Artists in 1857, eventually being elected a full member in 1864. Between 1860 and 1904, he successfully exhibited 48 works at the highly prestigious Royal Academy.
For a period, King lived and worked alongside the Scottish painter Thomas Faed RA, who profoundly influenced his artistic style. Like Faed, King mastered the art of the "cottage interior", painting intimate, atmospheric scenes of everyday middle-class or rural life that carried quiet, emotionally heavy subtexts.
While famous for interior domestic scenes featuring figures reading letters, sewing, or interacting, he also painted colorful French and British coastal scenes, landscapes, and travel pieces from trips to places like Rome.
On August 14, 1866, King married Annie Elizabeth Willson, a widowed daughter of William Preston.
Later in life, he resided at 103 Finchley Road, Hampstead, sharing the residence with fellow landscape painter Henry John Yeend-King.

His paintings remain highly valued representations of Victorian narrative art. Several of his pieces can be found online via Art UK and are preserved in major public institutions, including:
• "Jealousy and Flirtation" (1874) – Held at the Victoria and Albert Museum (London).
• "An Interesting Paragraph" – Held at the Leeds Art Gallery.
• "Morning Gossip" – Held at the Victoria Art Gallery (Bath).
