A fine and early pair of antique Italian Cantagalli maiolica (majolica) hand-painted Istoriato plates, Florence, Italy, circa 1880.
This very fine pair of plates decorated in the Istoriato style, first popularized in the Italian Renaissance of the early 1500s. Each plate with a scalloped rim, and each finely hand-painted with putti in landscape scenes.
One with a putto playing a drum with a cityscape to the background, the other with a winged putto leaning on a globe and holding his bow in the other hand.
Both plates are marked to the verso with the Cantagalli cockerel and low numbers signifying early decorator's marks, datin from the pottery's beginning.
Both plates are in very good antique condition, no chips, cracks or damage.
