James Webb was an English painter born into a family of artists. He modeled his style after the Romanticist painters, painting marine landscapes with a gentle atmosphere of pale and attractive colors. His work is included amongst significant collections such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., National Maritime Museum, The Tate, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. James Webb's maritime paintings also exhibited at The Royal Academy for 35 years up to 1888. James Webb mainly painted scenes of England, Wales, and other landscape and maritime scenes of Europe.
His palette was certainly influenced by the great British marine painters; Turner and Constable. His treatment of color and attention to the effects of light create a strong atmosphere in his work. Much of Webb’s work is featured in the Tate Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, London and in provincial galleries.
James Webb's record for a painting at auction was almost $263,000, in Nov 2006 at Van Ham Auction in Cologne Germany.
