A fine antique Italian Renaissance Revival carved walnut settle or bench, circa 1880.
The bench having a carved gallery with circular floral devices, the back with a carved foliate panel and having a 'Green Man' mask to the center, the arms are whimsically carved with pageboys' heads that terminate to dragons' claws.
The base with a seat that will accommodate one or two people comfortably, to the center is a hinged lid that encloses a substantial storage area, that is clean and aroma free. Below the seat the bench is carved with a corresponding frieze panel with winged griffins and foliate, it is flanked by a pair of carved Green Man masks with corbel brackets below, the bench is raised on a carved gadrooned plinth.
The bench is in excellent antique condition, it is sturdy and robust and comfortable, the bench has just been lovingly waxed in Bloomsbury's professional workshops and has a warm deep honey colored patina.
The bench would be perfect for a window seat, a hallway, at the end of a bed, in a lounge or a rustic kitchen or dining room, in fact just about anywhere one would like to have a beautiful bench that is also a work of art.
