A fine antique hand-painted and gilded Greek Orthodox icon, of Saint Modestos, circa 1800.
The icon is hand-painted with egg tempera paint on a wooden panel, with gilded accents to the saint's garments and halo, the green background with the saint's name written in black. To the center the figure of saint Modestos is depicted wearing brightly colored priestly vestments and is holding a bible in his left hand with his right hand in a gesture pointing to the heavens.
Saint Modestos served as the Archbishop of Jerusalem in the 7th century. He is known for his efforts to restore the holy sites of Jerusalem after they were destroyed during the Persian invasion of 614 AD. In popular tradition, he is frequently called upon for the protection and healing of domestic animals.
The panel with old customs stamps to the verso, the icon is in excellent antique condition and is ready to hang on your wall.
