A good antique late 18th century Welsh oak dresser, with plate rack and pot board below, circa 1790.
This is a very attractive and honest piece of vernacular Welsh antique furniture, from the South Wales region, the dresser is all original including the finish, pulls and hardware and of desirable size.
One of the main features of a South wales dresser compared to a North Wales dresser is that the plate racks were always open and the plates stand in a grove and rest against the wall when the dresser is in place. The other feature is that the dresser bases would have pot-boards rather than cupboards and large pans and pots would be stored on them.
This dresser displays those typical South Wales attributes, the plate rack having a series of 30 iron and brass hand-forged hooks to the front of the shelves allowing items with handles to be hung up.
The dresser base with five drawers with the original bun shaped pulls and each drawer is inlaid with a diamond shape bone escutcheon, the front of the dresser with four elegantly turned legs, pot-board to the base and raised on turned feet.
Condition is excellent, wonderful original color and finish, all original, sturdy and robust, joined and pegged construction throughout, a lovely original antique piece of vernacular Welsh furniture ready to grace your space.
