A fine antique English carved oak, 17th century coffer or chest, from the reign of King Charles II, circa 1660.
The hinged lid having four recessed panels enclosing substantial storage that is clean & aroma free. The front of the chest with four corresponding panels, each is finely & deeply carved with diamond shaped lozenges and foliate carving. The coffer having spiral helix twist carving to the sides and the base, above is a frieze of hobnail and leaf design.
The chest is raised on tall stile feet joined with carved 'ear' shaped brackets.
The chest comes from the time shortly after the English Interregnum (The English Commonwealth shortly after the Civil War), which was known as the restoration Period where the monarchy was restored to the throne under King Charles II.
This chest is in very good antique condition, it is robust and structurally very sound, it has a rich deep dark honey patina and has just been lovingly waxed in Bloomsbury's professional workshops and is ready to grace your space.
