An important American watercolor painting study for a stained glass panel, by the celebrated American artist John La Farge (1835-1910), the painting titled and signed and dated 1886-7.
La Farge was a highly influential American artist and polymath; illustrator, painter, muralist, interior designer, writer and stained glass artist, a rival and contemporary of Louis Comfort Tiffany. La Farge was well connected to the intelligentsia and prominent members of New York society in the 19th century.
This work displays an angel holding a wreath and leaning on a staff, it is signed by La Farge to the lower left and dated 1886-7, there is a gallery label to the verso for the celebrated New York Macbeth Gallery (1893-1953) , who represented La Farge during his lifetime and sold his works until the gallery closed in 1953, the label is titled "Angel of Justice" and John La Farge.  The Macbeth Gallery's archive is now housed in the Smithsonian and within the collection is the index card for this painting, please see the last image. The painting is also annotated in La Farge's own hand with his name and New York address to the lower left of the paper.
Condition is very good indeed, the painting has been rehoused in the original gilded frame with archival acid free museum mounts and UV glass.
