A fabulous antique American Aesthetic Movement carved walnut library table or desk, by Merklen Brothers, New York, circa 1890.
Merklen Brothers of New York Gilded Age furniture is highly recognizable by their signature construction techniques and being stylistically distinct from European fashions of the period.
The table top is carved with a frieze border and gadrooned edge, the skirt is finely and deeply carved with scrolling foliate and other geometric motifs, to the center is a single locking drawer (key present).
The table shows inspiration from the Neo-Renaissance movement having a base with
X-framed sides finely carved with griffins. The table is an important example of high-end Aesthetic Movement American craftsmanship, produced by the famous Merklen Brothers Manhattan workshops, the table with distinctive spiral turned stretchers: the lower base with multi-spindle spiral stretchers intersecting with a double-tier center support frame.
The table is raised on Merklen's signature Claw-and-Ball Feet: rather than a typical European solid claw, or American maker's using glass and brass claw and ball, Merklen used heavy brass/bronze casting caps featuring sharp talons clutching a perfectly spherical wooden ball, this table is raised on such feet.
This very stylish table is in excellent antique condition and is ready to grace your home or office.
