A large early 19th century British Romantic School pastoral landscape river scene with highland cattle, by Henry Milbourne (1781-1826), signed and dated Paris, circa 1815, Ex-Christie's.

Milbourne was a very talented painter in the British Romantic School, producing beautiful luminescent paintings heavily influenced by the Dutch Golden Age. He had shown at both the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He brought the Romantic idea of the British Countryside to continental viewers by exhibiting at the Paris Salons, very much like his contemporary, John Constable. Henry Milbourne as with other talented British artists went to France after the fall of Napoleon in 1815.

This painting is a fine example of the work Henry Milbourne had shown in the Paris Salons, it depicts a pair of highland cattle standing in a bucolic setting by a riverside, one seated in the grass the other looking at the artist. The painting is signed lower left "H. Milbourne Paris", it is housed in the original gilded gesso frame, on the verso is a Christie's auction label, there are also dates and other annotations on the stretcher.
The painting is in very good antique condition, this beautiful early 19th century painting by a major artist is ready to hang on your wall and grace your space.

Artist's Biography
Henry Milbourne (1781–1826) was an English landscape painter of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, recognized for his talent to create landscapes; bucolic countryside, farms and livestock, and river scenes. 
His father John Milbourne was also a talented artist, records note Henry's baptism around 1778–1781.
He entered the Royal Academy Schools in October 1816 at the recorded age of 35. He was actively exhibiting from roughly 1797 through 1821.
His landscape subjects typically capture scenic views across Wales, Suffolk, and Cornwall and his work would be generally described as British Romantic School. His work was highly influenced by the style of the Dutch Golden Age and reflects the pastoral and luminous elements of that period. He focused heavily on rustic countryside, drovers with cattle, horses, and quiet riverbanks.
During his career, he successfully exhibited 20 works at the Royal Academy and 15 works at the British Institution. Official biographical summaries, including records kept by the British Museum Collection, document that Milbourne expanded his footprint beyond London to exhibit directly in the prestigious Paris Salons. These temporary, high-society exhibitions introduced his classic pastoral British themes to 19th-century continental critics and patrons.
Fine examples of his bucolic paintings can be found in institutional holdings such as the Auckland Art Gallery New Zealand, The British Museum, The London Museum, Warwickshire Hall Gallery, Chequers Court (Country Residence of the UK Prime Minister), Metropolitan Museum.
