An incredibly rare set of 14 antique sterling silver Georgian plates, from the Estate of Edward Chichester 4th Marquess of Donegall and Duke of Belfast, Ireland, dated 1825. Weighing approximately 308 ounces of sterling silver.
The plates were made by the London silversmith William Eaton in 1825, who was known for platemaking, each plate has a full set of hallmarks; the lion passant for sterling silver, panther's head for the city of London, the date letter "K" for `1825, the head of King George IV and William Easton's makers mark "WE".
Each plate having a wavy & ribbed edge with crossed ribbon decoration, the plate having a recessed center to receive a porcelain dining plate, each plate is finely engraved with the Marquess of Donegall's coat of arms, a coronet with shielded arm and two mythical beasts passant to each side and engraved in Latin the Chichester family motto; Invictum Sequitur Honor (Honor follows him who does not seek it).
The condition of each plate is very good, each plate having the same hallmark, they are also numbered to the verso, each plate weighs approximately 22 oz. and the total silver weight is approximately 308 oz.
This is a very rare opportunity to acquire a set of Georgian silver plates by an important London maker for a noble Irish family.
