A fine & very large antique Orientalist bronze of an Arab/North African, by the French sculptors Eugene Blot (1830-1899) & Anatole-Jaean-Guillot (1865-1911). The sculpture dating circa 1880.
The 19th century produced many European artists that had a fascination with the Near East & North Africa, from artists including, Eugene Delacroix, William Holman Hunt, Jean-Leon Gerome, Henry Bacon and many more.
This very large bronze depicts an Arab male figure standing against a ruined wall of a mosque, with a mihrab doorway or niche behind him, to the rear of the bronze is a palm tree growing against the back of the wall. The figure is in traditional dress with a scimitar sword in one hand and the other hand guesturing outwards. The statue is signed to the base, condition is excellent, this is a substantial statue and an excellent example of a late 19th century Orientalist sculpture.
