A good antique late 17th century carved oak panelled chest, Charles II period, most likely West Country, circa 1680.
The coffer having a hinged top with 'breadboard' ends, enclosing a large storage interior below with a lidded till to the right side, such tills would store candles that were made of tallow which were also a natural moth repellent. The front of the chest having a hemi-spherical carved frieze, below are three panels inset with carved lozenge shaped designs. The chest is raised on tall stile feet, very often these feet have been reduced as these early chests would rest on stone floors and water would be used to wash the floor, sometimes the feet would rot and then reduced in height, this chest has tall original height feet.
The West Country covers Cornwall, Dorset, Devon, Bristol & Somerset, this is a chest typical of that region. The interior is clean & free of aroma and will proviode great storage for bedding, clothing or whatever you choose to store.
This great antique chest is around 350 years old and is in very good condition, it is ready to grace your space.
