A rare antique Spanish Colonial life size carved Santo figure of St. Paul the Evangelist, Mexico, circa 1750.
A wonderful carved colonial statue in the style of the Castilian School, the statue depicts St. Paul holding a bible in his left hand and his right hand outstretched with the sign of peace. The statue is finely polychromed & gilded, St. Paul's robes are beautifully hand-painted & gilded to give the impression of iridescent brocade cloth, the artistic technique to achieve this is called Estofado, which comes from the Italian word for fabric "stoffa".
The statue stands on the original pedestal which carved acanthus leaves & scrolls to resemble a carved Corinthian capital from a column, the statue alone is 56.25" tall and the plinth is 14" tall.
Condition is very good, a rare 18th century carved life size Santo of St. Paul.
