Important antique Russian Imperial silver gilt chalcedony (black onyx) diamond miniature desk clock, by workmaster Feodor Afanassiev (1870-1927), the clock circa 1910.

In 1883 Afanasiev moved to St Petersburg and was apprenticed in the Nevsky Prospekt workshop of Finnish master goldsmith Enok Sistonen. In 1888, Afanasiev moved into the workshop of the Court Jeweller Karl Bock, located just opposite Fabergé’s premises on Bolshaya Morskaya. He qualified first as journeyman in 1903, and then as a master goldsmith in 1905, after which he opened his own atelier at 36 Voznesensky Periulok. Afanasiev’s collaboration with the House of Fabergé as an independent supplier began in 1907 and lasted up until the firm’s 1918 closure at the outbreak of the Russian Revolution. Afanasiev produced a highly diverse range of work for Fabergé, including parasol handles, dishes, pill boxes, scent bottles, miniature clocks, seals and miniature egg pendants. He had a significant reputation for small silver gilt and guilloché enamel objects of vertu.

This clock is mounted with the Russian Imperial coat of arms of the double headed eagle and is inset with an inverted teardrop of ten old cut diamonds, below is a panel of chalcedony, the clock having a pair of Neo-Classical ribbed columns flanking a circular clock dial. The clock having an engraved laurel wreath bezel, the enamel dial with black roman numerals and gilded floral decoration. The clock stands on a corresponding plinth of chalcedony, the clock having the Kokoshnik mark for St. Petersburg and Feodor Afanassiev's mark to the base and rear of the clock case. Condition is very good and the clock is working and retains the winding key.
