A magnificent & large antique gilt-bronze & porcelain 8 day mantel clock, by Japy Freres, Paris, 1855,
This very elegant and lavishly decorated clock is by one of the best Parisian clock makers, and is stamped "Japy Freres et Cie" to the back of the movement and has the Medal of Honor stamp from 1855. The clock is of lyre shape and has a laurel wreath crested finial to the top, below is a hand-painted porcelain panel (possibly Sevres porcelain) decorated with a neoclassical dancing maiden, to each side of the clock is a winged caryatid and the base of the clock is held aloft with a gilt bronze young faun.
The red porcelain clock dial having black Roman numerals, there are two winding arbors to the dial, one for time and the other for the chime which does so delicately on a bell on both the hours and half hours. The clock has a base inset with red gilded porcelain plaques and is raised on scrolled hoof feet, the clock has the original gilt bronze stand which is covered to the top with red velvet, very often the stands to these clocks are missing.
Condition is excellent, no damage or restoration, the clocks works and keeps good time, the original pendulum & key are present.
One of the best mid 19th century gilt bronze clocks, by one of the very best French makers, in excellent condition, ready to grace your home or office!
