"The Panther Hunter", a sculpture by Danish artist Jens Adolph Jerichau (1816-1883).
The Panther Hunter gave Danish artist Jens Adolph Jerichau his international breakthrough, bringing in several prestigious commissions from Denmark and abroad. In Denmark he was appointed professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and also served as its director for extended periods of time. Jerichau’s international outlook eventually set him on a collision course with the trend-setting Danish art circles who did not share his open mind to international art trends.
This cast demonstrates Jerichau's interest was not in classical calm and quiet he was more interested in depicting motion and specific moments in time with scenes packed with action and extrovert emotions.
The Hunter holds a panther cub under one arm and a brass spear pointed at the adult panther, the sculpture with an incised signature to the base & stands on a separate stepped plinth. The statue is accompanied with a 19th century framed museum photograph of Jerichau's first rendition.
Condition is very good, no damage or repair.
