A fine & large antique Japanese Meji period lacquer lidded Hokai box with chased brass hardware and original ropes, circa 1890.
Hokai boxes were traditionally used in Japan to store & carry shells for Kai-awase game in the Edo and Meiji Period. This circular ribbed box & lid is raised on four slightly out-turned legs and decorated with elaborately engraved brass fittings, with corresponding engraved brass fittings to the lid.
Condition is very good.
