Antique Tudor/Elizabethan oak six plank boarded coffer/sword chest, circa 1540. The coffer from the period of King Henry VIII having a hinged lid enclosing a storage area lined with 19th century newspapers, the sides, rear and base all of joined plank construction. The lid having handcut steel hinges most likely replaced in the 17th century from the previous steel 'snipe' hinges, the chest retaining the original handcut steel lock plate to the front.

The coffer having traces of sponge and paint decoration, various ancient repairs. Condition is good, even after half a millennium the chest is still useable for storage, a rare survivor from the mid 1500s.
