A good quality antique late 19th/early 20th century Meiji Period Japanese hibachi table, made of Keyaki Wood, with a copper liner, circa 1890.
The hibachi is made from finely grained Keyaki wood and has the original copper liner, it is very well made by a master cabinet maker, dovetailed throughout. The hibachi has twin inset iron handles to the sides, the top having a lidded storage area with a pull out drawer, the hibachi is fitted with the original copper liner.
Wooden hibachi tables like this were primarily used as central heating devices for rooms, offering warmth in winter, and as portable stoves for cooking simple foods; brewing tea, and heating sake. These elaborately & beautifully crafted pieces served as warm focal points for families and guests, providing a communal space for gathering & entertainment, before the widespread use of electricity.
This hibachi is in excellent condition and is ready to grace your space.
