An important Italian Baroque oil on canvas painting of the Madonna, attributed to the Roman old master Carlo Maratta (1625-1713), the painting circa 1700.


Maratta, mainly painting in the Classical and Roman Baroque styles had a workshop in Rome and Pope Alexander VII had provided the artist with many commissions including; "The visitation" for Santa Maria Della Pace and "The Nativity" for the gallery of the Quirinal Palace, where the artist worked under the direction of Cortona. By 1660 Maratta had a stable of wealthy European patrons and the most successful studio in Rome, after the death of Bernini Maratta became the leading artist in Rome. In the last quarter of the 1600's he received a number of commissions from Pope Clement X including a ceiling fresco in the Palazzo Altieri. Maratta's works are in many important galleries & museums globally, including The Prado.


This painting depicting the Madonna with her hands close to her heart and she is surrounded with a halo of stars, the painting is housed in an 18th century period carved frame. relined and condition is very good.
