A good late 19th century antique Italian Grand Tour Neoclassical Carrara marble sculpture of a putto on a marble pedestal after Antonio Canova (1757-1822), circa 1890.
The statue is finely sculpted from white carrara marble & depicts a cherub or young boy seated with his legs crossed whilst reading a book, the statue is raised on a carved white varigated, veined marble pedestal (which breaks down in to several sections for ease of movement).
During the late 17th and throughout the 19th and early 20th century affluent people would go on the Grand Tour and visit the great cities of Europe and the Middle East. These early prosperous tourists would visit the great museums and galleries and would see the great paintings and sculptures from antiquity and the Renaissance. They would return home with  extravagant memories of their trips and this very lovely marble sculpture is one of them.
Condition is good, historic repairs, this beautiful Grand Tour marble sculpture is ready to grace your space.
Antonio Canova is considered the greatest Neoclassical sculptor of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Along with the painter Jacques Louis David, he was credited with ushering in a new aesthetic of clear, regularized form and calm repose inspired by classical antiquities. He was also renowned for his carving abilities and the refinement of his marble surfaces, which seemed as supple as real flesh. Canova's work is shown in major museums and galleries around the globe.
