A rare French/Brittany carved oak bench from the late 19th century, fitted with original carved French Renaissance portrait panels from circa, 1560.
The bench was constructed in Brittany circa 1890 mainly from ancient timber repurposed from other 16th century furniture, the back is mounted with a pair of finials & two back rails surrounded with a carved frieze and scrolled acanthus brackets to the sides. The armrests are carved with gargoyle head terminals and the seat has a hinged lid enclosing a large storage area. The front of the bench is fitted with five original carved portrait panels of three noblemen & two noble ladies, the panels date circa 1560, the bench is raised on stile feet and is made of pegged & joined construction throughout.
This rare & unusual antique bench is in very good condition, it is sturdy & robust and is ready to grace your space.
