A large antique 18th Century Chinese Qing dynasty carved wooden figure statue of the Bohisattva Guanyin.
This wonderful carved statue depicts Quanyin "The one who perceives the sound of the world", the statue is large at almost three feet tall and is carved from an Asian softwood, the figure rests on a late 19th century stand.
Carved seated on rockwork in rajalalitasana with the right arm rested on the right knee, wearing loose robes open at the chest to reveal an elaborate necklace, the face with a benevolent expression beneath the hair piled up into a high chignon.
This sculpture of Guanyin, sitting in the posture of 'Royal Ease', on a rocky throne, would have been the main image in a Buddhist temple. Worshiped as the Bodhisattva of Compassion, the deity had powers to rescue believers and bring them to salvation.
The statue is in very good condition.
