A very good antique 19th century British oil on canvas painting, seascape coastal scene by Samuel C. Bird, circa 1870.
This very attractive oil on canvas painting depicts a coastal scene with a team of Shire or Draught horses pulling a ship's main mast with chains out of the sea, after a shipwreck. A figure astride one of the lead horses is looking back to guide the horses, in the distance are two more figures walking by the water's edge. The sky is slightly overcast with the sun starting to break through, hovering above the waves & the surf a flock of seagulls observe the progress below.
The painting is signed lower left "Bird", the painting is housed in a the original gilded gesso frame, to the frame is a plaque titled; "A Coastal Scene" with the name "Bird" below.
The painting is in good condition, some expected age craquelure to the surface, this very engaging painting is ready to hang on your wall.
Samuel Bird was well known for his coastal scenes, fishing folk and horses, the auction record for such a wotrk was more than $26,000 at Christie's auction, London in 1990.
