A good antique 18th Century Russian Orthodox icon, circa 1750.
The icon depicts Saint Nilus of Sora (Nil Sorsky), who was a 15th century Orthodox monk & scribe, he was also one of the leaders of the "Non-Possessors", which was a movement that opposed ecclesiastical land ownership. St. Nilus demonstrated a deep understanding of the spiritual struggle and believed that the moral inner was the foundation of a productive life of the believer.
Saint Nilus is portrayed to the center of the icon dressed as an Orthodox monk and holding a scroll with Cyrillic calligraphy, to his right is the Virgin; "Our Lady of Prayer" dressed in ermine lined robes and wearing a crown. Saint Nilus is accompanied by four other saints, the background is finely painted and gilded with a Byzantine design of geometric crosses.
Condition is very good, no restoration or damage noted, this very beautiful icon is ready to grace your wall.
